The histroy of the game
In ancient Greece from the 6th century BC. there was the classic game of tossing coins, which were later replaced by flat stones and later by stone balls, the aim being to reach as far as possible. Later the Romans enriched the game by adding a target ball which they tried to get as close as possible with the stone balls. This version of the game was brought to Provence by Roman soldiers, sailors and wandering travelers.
Later, during the Middle Ages, the stone balls were replaced by wooden ones and the game began to be played in various countries of Europe. In the South of France around 1910 the game evolved into jeu provençal, the ancestor of today's pétanque.
Petanque is a sport for people of all ages. Played in an open space, it is a means of entertainment and socialization, while remaining competitive. In addition, although it is based on very simple rules, it is a sport with special technique and strategy, which requires coordination of movements, concentration on the goal and cooperation between the players of the same team.
